Hope You're Having a Great Summer!

Hello to all of my ALMOST 4th graders! I hope you've all had a great summer. Can you believe school starts in 2 weeks? I know a few of you have posted this summer, so I thought I'd let you talk about what you've been up to the past 2 months.

1. What has been your favorite part of the summer? Did you go anywhere exciting or do something new?

2. Did you read any good books this summer?

3. What are you looking forward to in 4th grade? Is there anything you're nervous about?

I've had a wonderfully relaxing summer! My husband and I went to Charleston and Cherry Grove, South Carolina. You all know we have a dog named Lola, and tonight, we may be getting another dog. No name for her yet! This summer I read an awesome book called, Because of Winn Dixie. It's on the 3rd grade reading list for this upcoming year.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all in the hallways this year. Be sure to say "hello!" :)

Junior Blogger of the Week: Emma B.!

Hi class! My name is Emma B. and I am going to share some information about myself. I am 9 years old. I LOVE to dance and draw. (Those are my hobbies.) My favorite sport is tennis (even though I don't play tennis.) And I love music! My favorite subject in school is is math, and my least favorite thing we learn is UNRAVVEL. We just learned about Cesar Chavez and how he helped migrant workers get good pay and living conditions. I made a tip for adding 9 here it is: if you add 9+5 you get 14 because the 4 in 14 is one less than 5. So it is the same thing with anything else plus 9. here are all of them: 9+2=11, 9+3=12 etc.  So  like 9+8=17 because the 7 is one less than 8. My favorite are The Dork Diaries series and any mystery or any adventure books. Here is my challenge for you to solve: What did Thurgood Marshaal help end? Please try this challenge!! Here is a fun fact about my family:I have a BIG family,so we all can't sit in one room for Christmas Eve dinner!!

This Week in Class

So far, our Junior Bloggers of the Week have been doing a great job! Students, if you haven't had time to comment on someone's post, please do so! This week, we've been getting ready for the CRCT by reviewing test-taking skills. The learning hasn't stopped, however; we are still learning new things! In reading, we are continuing our figurative language unit with the chapter book, Punished! In math, we've moved on to algebra and are learning how to describe and extend numeric and geometric patterns. In language arts, we have been learning about singular and plural possessive nouns. These can be tricky at first for students! In social studies, our study of Cesar Chavez has come to an end, and we are reviewing map skills.

Challenge Time!

Challenge #1: Today, we read this quote from Professor Wordsworth in Punished!: "Why are there two ways to spell 1, and three ways to spell 2, but only one way to spell 3?" For coins in the classroom, what are the spellings of the words that the professor is talking about?

Challenge #2: Extend this pattern: 3, 5, 25, 27, _____, _____, _____

Have a great week!

Conference Week

Hi Parents and Students,

This is our all-important conference week! We will be discussing the scores from your child's District Benchmark Assessment, progress so far this year, as well as the upcoming CRCT. I look forward to meeting with you all this week.

This Week in Class:

In reading today, we began the book, Punished! by David Lubar. We will be reading this book as our chapter book study for the next few weeks, and it is a great tool to teach figurative language (anagrams, puns, oxymorons, etc.).

In math, students have been learning about different types of graphs. So far, we've covered tally charts, bar graphs, and line plots. This week, we will cover pictographs and line graphs, focusing on interpreting them and using data to create them.

In language arts, we've been working on pronouns and how they replace nouns. We also finished up our Response to Literature writing sample. Students chose a book to read and had to make a text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connection.

Our social studies time has been very interesting, as we've finished Lyndon B. Johnson and have moved on to our last famous American, Cesar Chavez. We also have learned about latitude and longitude and how we use these lines to locate places on Earth.

CHALLENGE: Today's challenge actually has a reward! Today, we talked about possessive pronouns. Choose one of the following pairs of words: your/you're, their/they're, its/it's. For the pair of words you picked, explain what the difference is between the words (1 coin). Then, give an example sentence using each word correctly (2 coins). Remember to make your examples ORIGINAL. Don't copy the work of someone else. Also, don't forget to sign your name after your comment.

Have a great week!

Welcome!

Welcome to Mrs. Green's 3rd Grade Blog!!

I decided to begin this blog as an extra way of communicating with families about what's going on in our classroom! My hope is that this will also be a tool that students can use to update.
What's going on this week?

This week, we've had many things going on! During our Vocabulary/Word Study time, we've been working on multiple-meaning words and how they can be tricky when determining when to use them as a noun, verb, adjective, or other part of speech.

During our Reading time, we've been learning about making inferences. To make an inference during reading, you have to use clues from the text, as well as background knowledge. We've also been learning about our 7th Famous American, Thurgood Marshall. Today we learned how Thurgood worked diligently for civil rights by helping end segregation in schools during the 1950s and 1960s.

We've also been working on Response to Literature in writing. We read The Story of Ruby Bridges and were able to make text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections. I'm sure the students would love to tell you how similar Ruby's story is when compared to what was happening during Thurgood Marshall's time!

In math, we've been working hard to conquer LONG DIVISION! This is always a tricky concept for the students, but it is finally beginning to stick! We spent about 3 days just learning the process (divide, multiply, subtract, bring it down), and we've now been incorporating that knowledge into our math workshop problems for about 3 days.

COMING SOON:
Reading: Review for CRCT and Literature Study with the book, Punished!  by David Lubar
Language Arts: Possessive Nouns and Pronouns
Math: Data Analysis (charts and graphs) and Algebra
Social Studies: Lyndon B. Johnson and Cesar Chavez
Other: Test-Taking Strategies Unit

I hope everyone finds this new way of communicating helpful. My goal is to eventually have the students updating our website. Please come back to see our site!
