Learning About Democracy

Our social studies theme in 3rd grade focuses on the origins of American democracy. We start by discovering what ideas we have borrowed from ancient Greece, including the idea of democracy, the Olympic Games, architecture, and more.

As an extension, students completed an opinion writing piece stating what they thought was the most important idea we borrowed from ancient Greece. Check out some of their responses below!

This year, students will also be introduced to some Famous Americans who have expanded our rights and freedoms. The first person we studied was Paul Revere. Students learned how some of the work he did led to helping America gain our independence from Great Brittan, one of those things being the Midnight Ride.

Students recreated the map of the Midnight Ride showing places involved, as well as the routes of all three riders: Paul Revere, Samuel Prescott, and William Dawes.

In other news, I wanted to congratulate our class on donating over $100 towards the Paulding Christmas project! Our class came in first place for all 3rd grade classes! Way to go!

The Midnight Ride of...Who?

We have been up to so much the past month, and I haven't had time to post as much as I'd like to! The  focus recently in social studies has been Paul Revere and the work he did to help the colonies gain their independence from Great Britain.

As a culminating project, students worked as cartographers to create a map of the famous Midnight Ride. We discussed that although Paul Revere became famous for this because of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, he was not alone! He had help from Samuel Prescott and William Dawes. I will be posting some pictures of the maps soon.

Students also had the option of taking their learned further and researching one of the 13 colonies. Here are some of the projects:

Jaxon researched Georgia.

Morgan also researched Georgia.

Charlsey researched New York.

I was really impressed by the information the students came up with. Our next unit is Government, and students will be given an at-home task to show what they've learned about the three branches. I can't wait to see the creative ideas they come up with!

Heat Day

Tuesday was third grade's Heat Day. We use this day to do some fun heat activities to help the students have a better understanding of the concepts. Mrs. Green worked along with Mrs. LaRocca on the Solar Tube station.
The Solar Tube showed how black absorbs light, heat moves by radiation from the sun, and how convection (heat moving through gases) caused the tube to lift. Some students made the connect about how this is similar to a hot air balloon.

Students, here are 2 questions for you: What was your favorite station from Heat Day, and why? What's something that you learned or you thought was interesting?

Try to respond to this question over Fall Break. I hope everyone has a great week off!

Here is the challenge question we talked about in class today. It is worth 10 coins! Do not put your answer on here. Write it on a piece of paper and turn it in tomorrow.

What is the name for a number that can only be found by multiplying it by 1? What are some other examples? 19 and 11 are examples. 19 x 1 = 19 and 1 x 19 = 19

If you think you know, write it down! You can use the Internet or other resources to help you.

First Week of School

We are off to a great start in third grade! We spent the first 2 days of school getting to know each other. On Friday, we worked on setting up some of our journals and getting organized.

Next week, we will be diving right in with our learning. Here's what's to come:

Reading-We will be reading Because of Winn-Dixie and our focus will be characters. I will also be assessing students' reading levels. We have our first trip to the media center on Friday for orientation and to check out books.

Math-Our focus will be on rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, but we will begin with some place value review. We will also be starting Number Talks, which is new to our classroom this year. A Number Talk is a daily conversation with the students as a group. It takes about 5-10 minutes and focuses on students solving math problems mentally and using a variety of strategies.

Writing-Students will be working on using writing to express their opinion on a topic using evidence/reasons.

Language Arts- We will start off with a quick review of nouns, but our main focus will be on plural and irregular nouns.

Science-Magnets! This unit is always a favorite with the students. We will be doing lots of hands-on experiments this year!

On another exciting note, it was released recently that Shelton was ranked #14 out of 1,165 elementary schools in Georgia based on our CRCT scores! I'm so excited for this year's group to blow the test out of the water yet again! You can see the other rankings HERE.

Have a great weekend!
